Published Author, Inventor and CEO

Michael D. Hopkins is an author, inventor, and CEO recognized for his work in operations, security, and product development. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation for steady leadership and a practical approach to solving problems. His early professional success at UPS, combined with his experiences living and traveling throughout Europe, eventually led him to develop the Aeropod and launch Napstar. Today, he continues to guide the company as it works to improve the airport rest experience through private, functional rest pods.

Early Life and Background

Michael spent much of his youth in Europe, an experience that shaped his interests and broadened his understanding of travel and transportation systems. He attended Zweibrücken Air Force High School in Germany and graduated in 1985. Growing up overseas exposed him to different environments and the realities of international travel, observations that would later influence his ideas around comfort and convenience inside airports.

After returning to the United States, Michael enrolled at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 1990. His education provided a foundation in analytical thinking and organizational structure, skills that would support his early career and later entrepreneurial work.

Launching a Career in Operations and Leadership

Michael began his professional career with United Parcel Service in 1989. Working as a Hub Operations Supervisor in St. Louis, Missouri, and later in Denver, Colorado, he supervised sales pickup routes and coordinated start times for large operational teams. His work contributed to reducing service failures by 40 percent, a significant achievement in a fast-paced environment known for strict performance expectations.

In addition to his supervisory role in pickup operations, he served as an Outbound Primary Sort Supervisor. This position required him to direct teams responsible for sorting and routing high volumes of shipments each day. The experience taught him how to manage demanding workflows, maintain safety standards, and respond effectively under pressure. His commitment to consistent performance earned him several Safety and Service Awards, received in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, and 1998.

These early years at UPS strengthened his leadership and operational planning skills. They also introduced him to the challenges that large transportation and logistics companies face, lessons that would stay with him throughout his career.

Entrepreneurial Drive and the Development of Napstar

Michael’s professional path shifted in January 2005 when he founded Napstar, LLC in Denver, Colorado. As the company’s owner and manager, he guided research efforts, built marketing strategies, and handled business accounts.

During this period, he created the Aeropod, an idea inspired by the resting spaces he had observed in European airports. His many years of travel made him aware of how limited the options for rest in airports across the United States were. Travelers often had long layovers or delays, but few private places to recover or relax. He believed that a simple, well-designed rest pod could make a meaningful difference.

The Aeropod became the central focus of Napstar. To further share the concept, Michael wrote and published The Denver Aeropod, a book that reflects his interest in practical design and his dedication to improving the travel experience.

Expanding Expertise in Security and Risk Management

In August 2017, Michael broadened his career by joining Risc Management Security Investigator Company and Community Security Company LLC. As Operations Manager, he worked in areas such as risk evaluation, executive protective management, and on-site preparations.

His responsibilities also extended into HR administration and the coordination of training for security teams working in mental health clinics. In addition, he assisted with the certification of security guards for the City and County of Denver. This period allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of risk management and team readiness, skills that complemented his operations background.

Returning to UPS as an Operations Manager

Michael returned to UPS in December 2019, this time in Denver, Colorado, as an Operations Manager. His role centered on supervising internal hub inbound operations and supporting the feeder department. Drawing on his earlier UPS experience, he continued to focus on accuracy, safety, and dependable results.

Throughout his years with UPS, both during his early career and upon his return, he earned several significant recognitions. These included service awards from the Democratic National Convention in 2008 and the President's Club Awards in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

Prototype Development and the Next Phase of Napstar

As Napstar prepared to advance its product design, Michael Hopkins from Denver began collaborating with Jono Isbell, CEO of Hollow(arch). Their partnership became formalized with a development proposal dated October 7, 2025, focused on creating a next-generation NapStar prototype.

The proposal outlines a vision for private, sound-dampened pods that combine comfort with practical construction. The planned design includes lightweight materials, modular components, CNC-routed parts for precision, metal structural elements, and refined finishes such as wood veneer or high-quality vinyl. The pods are intended to ship flat, assemble quickly, and allow for straightforward servicing.

These efforts support Michael’s long-term goal of improving airport rest options and providing travelers with a more reliable, private solution.

Philanthropy and Community Involvement

Beyond his corporate work, Michael has contributed to charitable and community-oriented efforts, particularly through his involvement with mental health clinics and training programs for security personnel. His commitment to service remains a meaningful part of his professional life.

Personal Life and Interests

Outside of his career, Michael values health and fitness, which help him maintain balance and focus. He continues to live in Denver, Colorado, where he remains connected to his community and to Napstar's operations.
